Cholera raged through the port city for ten weeks, bringing all commerce and trade to a standstill. Doctor Robert Koch, who discovered the cholera pathogen, was brought in to help solve the problem. He was appallled by the state of the city's public health, especially in the slums. In order to address the issue they had to burn down entire slums and suburbs and install a proper water sewage system. Entire areas of the city had to be rebuilt.
