Upon learning about Hitler's suicide, the Soviets had attempted to bomb and destroy the bunker at the end of the war, but their bombs were only able to crack the outer walls. During the cold war the site was quite close to the Berlin wall and thus remained untouched. However, after the wall went down, the government authorities wanted to destroy the last remnants of all Nazi landmarks and that's what they did with the bunker. The construction of the buildings in the area around the bunker was a way of ensuring that the surroundings remained anonymous and unremarkable. Today the only mark of what this area used be is a plaque by the parking lot which was put up during 2006 FIFA World Cup to show the tourists where the site used to be. Other than that there is nothing special about the place. In fact it's quite ironic that the saddest little park ever sits upon it.
